How is FUE Hair Transplantation Performed?

In FUE hair transplant procedures, a tool called a punch is used to make a small, circular incision in the skin around a follicular unit for the purpose of separating this skin from the surrounding tissue. Then, this unit is removed from the scalp, leaving a small open hole.

This process is repeated until the hair transplant surgeon harvests enough follicular units for the planned hair restoration. This process can take 4-6 hours and sometimes can be completed in two consecutive days with long sessions. Donor wounds, about 1 mm in size, heal completely in seven to ten days, leaving small white scars embedded in the hair on the back and sides of the scalp.

Before the grafts are harvested, small “recipient areas” are made in the hairless area of the scalp using sapphire blades with fine tips. Follicular units are then placed in recipient areas where they will develop into healthy hair-producing follicles.
